Amaryllis Earrings

The amaryllis on these earrings is from Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l’Europe (1845–80), a lavish 19th-century periodical produced and partly edited by Louis Van Houtte, a Belgian horticulturist. After his return from a plant hunting expedition in Brazil, Van Houtte published the periodical monthly from a nursery he established in Belgium that specialized in colorful, rare and exotic plants, many of which came from South America. The 2,000 remarkably beautiful plates in the historic series are hand-colored lithographs.
