This title is volume 1 of the Advances in Economic Botany series. The science of ethnobotany has evolved from an early stage in which plants and their uses were merely catalogues, to a stage in which the knowledge obtained from anthropological, botanical, chemical, ecological and other studies is synthesized. The volume brings together work done by resident and non-resident neotropical researchers on the cultivation and uses of plants by various indigenous groups. The papers represent results of studies done by scientists with a better understanding of and appreciation for the culture and traditions of indigenous groups. The future development of the science of ethnobotany will be enhanced by more studies such as the ones presented here.
