This richly illustrated catalog chronicles more than three centuries of glasshouse evolution. It brings the rich architectural, social, and horticultural history of glasshouses to life, illustrating the many ways that architectural ingenuity and horticultural expertise have allowed people to grow tropical plants in cold climates. Prepared to accompany an exhibition at The New York Botanical Garden, the catalog is filled with illustrations ranging from an 1646 view of the Orangery at the Villa Aldobrandini and a 1816 hand-colored aquatint by Humphry Repton of his glassed forcing garden in winter, to a 1931 panorama of the United States Botanic Garden and a 2005 photograph of the high tech Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections at the New York Botanical Garden.
