Hoglands
The Home of Henry and Irina Moore
by David Mitchinson, Anita Feldman Bennet, Andrew Causey, Martin Davis, Ann Garrould, Mary Moore, and Michael Phipps
Hoglands was home to Henry Moore and his wife Irina for almost 50 years. Moore purchased the house in 1940, after his Hampstead home and studio were damaged during the Blitz. He found the location of Hoglands, in Hertfordshire, “surprisingly pretty and unspoilt for so near to London.” The space and the landscape were important to Moore as an environment for his sculpture.
This lavishly illustrated, oversized book traces the development of the house, Moore’s studio, Irina’s garden, and their art collection from 1940 until their deaths in the 1980s. The period photographs, many previously unpublished, offer an intimate view of Moore’s life and reveal the inspirations for his work.
