Marie-Antoinette and the Last Garden at Versailles
by Christian Duvernois, photographs by François Halard
To escape the formalities and royal obligations of Louis XVI's court, Marie-Antoinette created a private realm of pleasure for herself at Versailles. At the Trianon and the Hamlet, she enjoyed the pastoral delights of a grotto, a working farm, and a dairy. She also planted the first Anglo-Chinese garden among the pleasure pavilions that revolutionized architecture and gardening trends for the century to come.
For the first time since its recent renovation, Marie-Antoinette's entire private domain and its story are told in beautiful photographs by François Halard and in the well-researched text by Christian Duvernois.
