NYBG Coast of Coromandel Journal
The botanical illustration of the graceful leaves and flowers of
Mimosa procera on this elegant journal is from
Plants of the Coast of Coromandel, a rare and beautiful early 19th-century work depicting exotic plants found in southeastern India. Local Indian artists created the original illustrations of
flowers, shrubs and trees, which were then engraved and hand colored in
London, bringing images of an exotic world of plants to the West.
The journal has hard covers and a covered spine concealing a spiral wire binding, which allows it to lie flat for easy writing.
The illustration is from the Rare Book Collection of the Mertz Library here at the Botanical Garden.
