NYBG Tulip Placemats
Colorful tulips all in a row grace these charming placemats. The images are from
Phytanthoza Iconographia (Regensberg: 1737-1745), a rare and important 18th-century botanical work, one of the first to use color printing. The copper plate engravings are a combination of etching and mezzotint that allows for delicate lines and a very fine grain. Among the illustrators was the renowned Georg Ehret, the preeminent botanical artist of the period.
Sturdily made to last, the cork-backed placemats can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The set comes elegantly packaged in a custom New York Botanical Garden box with silver foil stamping. An insert provides information on the original work of botanical art from the Rare Book Collections of the Mertz Library here at the Garden.
Set of 4 placemats, each a different design. 16¾” x 11¼”
