This photographic field guide presents the significant details of trees native to eastern North America as well as many cultivated species, all in their natural habitats. The guide covers 364 trees from the eastern seaboard to central Texas and the Rockies, and includes almost 1,000 full-color photographs. Each species is fully described, including habitat, range, and lore.

The photographs of leaves, bark, flowers, and autumn color suggest that this may be the one guide to bring on your next hike along the Escarpment Trail. The lore in Part II is unfailingly interesting, although some of the culinary suggestions require a leap of faith. Wild muskrats couldn't make me chew the sour fruit of Rhus glabra (common sumac) to quench my thirst.
