Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants
A Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide
By C. Colston Burrell
More and more gardeners are seeking native alternatives to invasive plants for use in gardens, yards, and natural plantings. Burrell has come up with a great idea for a book, and handled it deftly. By both identifying invasive plants and suggesting native, neighborly replacements, he solves two problems at once. Helpful hints are organized by horticultural plant group: trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous plants, and grasses. For each invasive species listed, several natives are suggested as alternatives, along with their natural range in continental North America. Ideally, the alternative matches most or all of the invasive plant's desirable characteristics, such as flowers, fruit, fall color, and ease of care. If you have had it up to here with rose of Sharon seedlings, or want to strangle the purple loosestrife, this handy guide is highly recommended.
