The Gardens of Rome Series

Duca Mattei Perspective

We are delighted to offer unique, limited-edition fine art reproduction prints from the Rare Book Collections of the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at The New York Botanical Garden. Each print comes with information about the original work, as well as a dated and signed Certificate of Authenticity specifying the number and edition of the print.

The illustrations in this series are from The Gardens of Rome (1670), Giovanni Battista Falda.

Falda (1643-1678) specialized in architectural views after studying drawing with three leading Roman architects, Bernini, Borromini, and Pietro da Cortona. Through the 1660s and 1670s, he completed nearly 300 prints of the fountains, palaces, and gardens of Rome, including the pope’s private villa on the Quirinal hill, now the presidential palace.

The Gardens of Rome is one of the most important garden books of the Italian Baroque. Its unsurpassed visual presentation of the major Roman gardens presents landscape design through a refined use of perspective and extremely accurate detail.
