The chrysanthemum (kiku in Japanese) is treasured throughout Japan, where it has been cultivated and trained into exquisitely shaped displays for more than 1,500 years. The image on these earrings is from Kikka Meiji–sen, a very rare nursery catalog illustrated with full–page color woodcuts, published in Tokyo in 1891 by Kanezumi Imai. Translated into English from 19th–century Japanese, the title of this magnificent illustration reads ''an offering of fall-colored leaves.''
Earrings are gold plated on edges and back with applied colors on front. Each measures approximately 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. Pair comes in a customized gift box.
