This notecard set features images from Woodlands Orchids, by English author, journalist, barrister, and orchid fancier, Frederick Boyle (1841-1914). In 1863, he went on a trip to Indonesia with his brother. This visit provided material for a book and chapters in several other volumes of travel accounts. In a later life he wrote a number of books about orchids which he kept as a hobby.
Woodlands Orchids consists of a description of the famous collection of orchids at Woodlands, an estate belonging to Mr. Robert Measures who commissioned Boyle to write a book about the history of his favorite plant. Boyle gathered together a number of tales of the adventures of orchid-seekers and the book is illustrated by colored plates of the rarer orchid species mentioned. Boyle's writings on orchids helped to inspire the craze for growing them known as orchidmania.
This stunning botanical work is housed in the Rare Book Collection of NYBG's LuEsther T. Mertz Library.
