Parkia R. Br. is a pan tropical genus of 30 or more species, about half of which occur in the neotropics, from Honduras to southeastern Brazil. All are woody and most are large trees of the lowland rain forest canopy. The genus Dimorphandra Schott belongs to the family Caesalpiniaceae [Leguminosae, subfamily Caesalpiniae (Cowan, 1981)]. According to Heywood (1978) the subfamily (Caesalpiniae) covers 180 genera and 2500 to 3000 species of tropical and subtropical trees and shrubs.
